Oklahoma!

Oklahoma! is a filmed version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, set in the early twentieth century in the Indian Territory of the American West. Against a backdrop of tension between farmers and cowboys, it follows Laurey Williams, a farm girl courted by two rivals: the cowboy Curly McLain and Jud Fry, the threatening hired hand on her aunt's farm. The production presents this familiar story in a darker staging than traditional revivals, with Trevor Nunn directing for the screen alongside Chris Hunt.

The cast is led by Hugh Jackman as Curly, Josefina Gabrielle as Laurey and Shuler Hensley as Jud, with Peter Polycarpou, Maureen Lipman and Jimmy Johnston among the credited performers, twenty-two in all. Nunn came to the project after directing Lady Jane, Twelfth Night and Cats, and later directed Red Joan; this film was Hunt's first directing credit. The musical numbers and western romance give the film its genres, and its running time of nearly three hours reflects its stage origins.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.7 from around 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a much smaller base of about 30 votes, so the two audience measures rest on very different levels of participation. The film was released on September 26, 1999.
