Short description

Bianca Piper is a high school senior who is funny and loyal but has never seen herself as the equal of her prettier, more popular friends. When Wesley Rush, a charming football player and her former childhood neighbor, tells her that other students call her the DUFF, the designated ugly fat friend of her group, her world is thrown off balance. Bianca resolves to shed the label, and she turns to Wesley for help reinventing herself, partly in the hope of getting closer to Toby, the boy she has long admired. Standing in her way is Madison, a cruel classmate who hands out such labels to others.

The film was directed by Ari Sandel, the first of the three features listed for him, and written by Josh A. Cagan. It is a high school comedy set in the United States, with Mae Whitman as Bianca, Robbie Amell as Wesley, Bella Thorne as Madison, Skyler Samuels and Bianca A. Santos as her friends, and Romany Malco as the school principal. It was produced by McG, Susan Cartsonis and Mary Viola, with 48 credited cast members and 54 credited crew members.

Made for a modest budget, the film earned far more than it cost worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from about 107,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8 from roughly 4,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 118 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Cody Keplinger's novel "Dummy".
  • Bella Thorne's character was not in the novel "Dummy"; it was created specifically for the film. However, her character is mentioned in another novel by Cody Keplinger – "Lying Out Loud" – as someone Wesley once dated.
