Mechanic: Resurrection
Short description
Arthur Bishop has left his life as a contract killer behind and is living quietly with his partner, Gina. That peace ends when his old adversary Riah Crain abducts her and forces Bishop back into his former trade. To secure her release, Bishop must travel the world and carry out three killings, each staged to look like an accident. The targets are difficult to reach, and the task grows more dangerous as he works against the clock.
Dennis Gansel directs, following a run of German-language features that includes Before the Fall, The Wave and We Are the Night; this is the fifth film he directed and his first English-language production. Jason Statham returns as Arthur Bishop, the role he played in the 2011 film Mechanic, with Jessica Alba as Gina, Tommy Lee Jones as the arms dealer Max Adams, Michelle Yeoh as Mei and Sam Hazeldine as Riah Crain. The screenplay is credited to Brian Pittman, Philip Shelby and Tony Mosher. It was shot across several countries and cost about 40 million dollars, going on to take roughly 126 million dollars worldwide.
Audience responses were middling: on IMDb it holds 5.8 from about 103,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 from a much smaller pool of around 3,700. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 57 reviews sits below both audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot on 4 continents and in 6 countries: in Australia, in Europe (Bulgaria), in South America (Brazil) and in Asia (Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia).
- The fight in the cafe on top of Sugarloaf Mountain was filmed in a studio, and the views of the surrounding area were later filmed on location and added to the shot.
- The island prison in Malaysia was called "Penjara Kidah." Filming took place in a real, now-closed prison in Chanthaburi province, Thailand.
- The dynamic finale of the film was shot on a luxurious yacht docked in the Gulf of Siam near Pattaya. Statham worked in scenes with Jessica Alba and Sam Hazeldine, and between takes of the scenes, he ran across the entire deck to the second film crew to shoot hand-to-hand combat scenes.
- After killing the arms dealer in prison, the hero, played by Jason Statham, escapes by jumping off a cliff into the sea. Statham was a member of the British national diving team for 12 years.
- The plot of the film borrowed heavily from Gary McKendry's "The Professional" (2011), where the protagonist had to kill three people and stage each murder as an accident or death from natural causes.
