Short description
Sarah Huttinger is a journalist stuck writing obituaries, and she has just agreed to marry her boyfriend Jeff even though she is not sure she wants to go through with it. She travels with him to Pasadena for her younger sister's wedding, where she must spend time with a tennis-obsessed family she has never really felt part of. During the visit her grandmother Katharine reveals a long-kept secret: Sarah's late mother had a brief affair with a man named Beau Burroughs shortly before marrying Sarah's father. Sarah begins to suspect she is the product of that affair, and she sets out to find Beau and learn the truth about her origins.
The film was directed by Rob Reiner, the eleventh of the nineteen features he has directed in chronological order, following The Story of Us and preceding The Bucket List. Ted Griffin wrote the screenplay, and Jennifer Aniston plays Sarah, with Kevin Costner as Beau, Shirley MacLaine as Katharine, Mark Ruffalo as Jeff, Richard Jenkins as Earl and Christopher McDonald as Roger.
It was released in December 2005 and runs 97 minutes. Made for a budget of about 70 million US dollars, it took in roughly 89 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from over 60,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from about 1,300 votes; a critics' rating of 4.5 from 116 reviews places it below even those audience scores.

- The plot unfolds in 1997.
- Initially, the screenwriter Ted Griffin was acting as director, but he was fired two days after filming began, and Rob Reiner took over. Work on the film stalled for a couple of days while Reiner made some changes to the script, cast, and crew, after which filming resumed. As a result of all these complications, Charlie Hunnam, Leslie Ann Warren, Tony Bill, and Greta Scacchi left the film.
