Bull Durham
Short description
Bull Durham follows Crash Davis, a veteran catcher sent down to the minor league Durham Bulls to mentor Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh, a talented young pitcher with a wild arm and little discipline. The two men clash over how the game should be played, and their uneasy partnership is complicated by Annie Savoy, a longtime fan of the team who each season takes one player under her wing, both on the field and off it. This time she has two candidates, and the rivalry between the veteran and the rookie plays out across a long season.
Ron Shelton wrote and directed the film, his first as director. Kevin Costner plays Crash, Susan Sarandon plays Annie, and Tim Robbins plays Nuke, with Trey Wilson, Robert Wuhl and William O'Leary in supporting roles. The production, made for about 7 million dollars, returned roughly 51 million worldwide, a strong result for its budget.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from over 58,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10, drawn from 72 reviews, places it above both audience scores. Shelton went on to direct White Men Can't Jump, Tin Cup and later films, several of them also built around sports.
What's left behind the scenes
- The on-location shooting took place in North Carolina in October and November 1987, so the grass had to be tinted green.
- Director Ron Shelton chose Kevin Costner for the role of Crash Davis because he himself played baseball in high school and had remained in excellent physical shape since then.
- The film crew went to the nearby town of Chapel Hill, where a Pink Floyd concert was taking place, and asked the audience to act as extras. This is why many of the extras are sporting 'Dark Side of the Moon' t-shirts (the band’s 1973 album) – they came to the set immediately after the concert.
- Michelle Pfeiffer auditioned for the role that was eventually played by Susan Sarandon, but she was considered too young.
- When the chubby boy told Kevin Costner’s hero, “Hit it, Crash,” the actor spontaneously retorted, “Shut up.” The boy didn’t expect such a response and burst into tears.
