Set during the Second World War, this horror film follows a group of children evacuated from London to escape the bombing. They are taken to Eel Marsh House, a remote manor in the village of Crythin Gifford, under the care of teacher Eve Parkins and headmistress Jean Hogg. The house seems a safe refuge, but the children begin behaving strangely, and Eve comes to suspect that something in the building has been stirred by their arrival. Forty years after the house's earlier haunting, its dark history resurfaces, and with the help of pilot Harry Burnstow, Eve tries to protect her charges and uncover the story behind the Woman in Black. The film is a sequel to the 2012 adaptation of Susan Hill's novel, moving the story forward four decades from the earlier events.
Tom Harper directed, working from a screenplay by Jon Croker based on Susan Hill's characters. It was his second feature, following The Swarm, and precedes Wild Rose, The Aeronauts and Heart of Stone in his filmography. Phoebe Fox and Helen McCrory lead the cast, with Jeremy Irvine, Oaklee Pendergast, Ned Dennehy and Adrian Rawlins in supporting roles.
Made for about 15 million dollars, the film took roughly 49 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. Audience response was mixed: on IMDb and on TMDB it holds ratings around the low-to-mid five range from over a thousand votes, while critics were less favourable, with a critics' rating of 4.6 out of 10 from 78 reviews.
