The 5th Wave
Short description
The 5th Wave is set in a world brought to its knees by a staged alien invasion. The attacks arrive in successive waves, each more devastating than the last, and by the fourth, society has collapsed entirely and survivors have learned that trusting anyone could be fatal, since the invaders can take human form. Sixteen-year-old Cassie Sullivan has lost her family and is trying to reach her younger brother, who was taken away, while the threat of a fifth wave looms over everyone left alive.
Directed by J Blakeson, the film was released in 2016 and followed his 2009 debut, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, coming before I Care a Lot (2021). Chloë Grace Moretz plays Cassie, with Nick Robinson as Ben Parish, Alex Roe as Evan Walker, Maria Bello as Sergeant Reznik, and Ron Livingston and Maggie Siff as Cassie's parents. The screenplay was written by Akiva Goldsman, Susannah Grant and Jeff Pinkner, and the producers include Tobey Maguire, Lynn Harris and Graham King. Around 40 cast members and 107 crew members are credited.
Made for a budget of 38 million dollars, the film took in roughly 110 million dollars worldwide. Audiences have been divided: on IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from about 126,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from over 6,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 from 143 reviews places it below both audience scores.
