Before I Wake
Short description
Before I Wake centers on a married couple, Jessie and Mark, who adopt an eight-year-old boy named Cody after losing their own young son. They soon discover that Cody dreads falling asleep. What he dreams while sleeping becomes real, appearing in the waking world around him, and his nightmares are dangerous.
The film was directed by Mike Flanagan, who wrote the screenplay with Jeff Howard. It is the fourth feature he directed, following Absentia, Oculus and Hush, all released within a few years of each other, and it arrived the same year as Ouija: Origin of Evil. Kate Bosworth plays Jessie, Thomas Jane plays Mark, and Jacob Tremblay plays Cody, with Annabeth Gish, Lance E. Nichols and Scottie Thompson in supporting roles. The production was handled by Relativity Media, Intrepid Pictures, Demarest Films and MICA Entertainment.
Before I Wake was released in April 2016 and runs 97 minutes. Its worldwide box office came to about 5 million dollars. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 2,000 votes, while critics' reviews give it 6.6 out of 10 from 36 reviews, placing the two measures close together. The film mixes drama, fantasy, horror and thriller elements, using Cody's sleeping mind as the source of both wonder and threat for the family that takes him in.
What's left behind the scenes
- Thomas Jane is known for playing Frank Castle in the 2004 film adaptation of the Marvel comic book *The Punisher*, directed by Jonathan Hensleigh. In 2008, Dash Mihok played the role of Martin Soap in the franchise reboot, *Punisher: War Zone* (directed by Lexi Alexander), and also appeared in *Somnia*.
- Director Mike Flanagan objected to his work being called a “horror film.” He preferred the terms “fairy tale” or “supernatural drama.”
- The butterflies shown at the beginning of the film do not have antennae. All butterflies and moths shown after Cody's school friend draws antennae on the drawn butterfly do have antennae. This detail shows the strong influence that those around him have on Cody’s imagination.
- The premiere was scheduled for September 25, 2015, but Relativity Media (the US distributor) filed for bankruptcy, leaving the release date uncertain.
