Short description
Central Intelligence follows Calvin Joyner, a mild-mannered accountant who once seemed destined for great things in high school but now leads an unremarkable life. When he reconnects on Facebook with a former classmate, the meeting pulls him into the world of international espionage. The friend turns out to be a CIA operative working to stop a plot against American agents, and Calvin finds himself caught up in shootings, betrayals and danger well beyond his office routine.
The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, his third feature after DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story in 2004 and We're the Millers in 2013, and it precedes Skyscraper and Red Notice in his filmography. Thurber wrote the screenplay with Peter Steinfeld and Ike Barinholtz. Dwayne Johnson plays Bob Stone and Kevin Hart plays Calvin Joyner, with Amy Ryan, Danielle Nicolet, Jason Bateman and Aaron Paul among the supporting cast.
Released in June 2016, the film had a budget of about 50 million dollars and took roughly 217 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 237,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.4 from about 6,500 votes. A critics' score of 5.7 from 187 reviews sits below those audience figures, suggesting reviewers were less enthusiastic than viewers.
