The Accountant

Christian Wolff is a math savant who understands numbers far better than people. He runs a small-town accounting practice as a front, but his real work is untangling the books of some of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations. When the Treasury Department's financial crimes unit, led by Ray King, closes in on his activities, Christian takes on a legitimate client to deflect attention: a robotics company where an employee in the accounting department has found a discrepancy worth millions of dollars. As he digs into the company's records and gets closer to the truth, people around the case begin to die.

The film is directed by Gavin O'Connor and written by Bill Dubuque. It followed O'Connor's Jane Got a Gun and preceded The Way Back, and it was later followed by a sequel, The Accountant². Ben Affleck plays Christian, with Anna Kendrick as Dana Cummings, J.K. Simmons as Ray King, Jon Bernthal as Brax, Jeffrey Tambor as Francis Silverberg and Cynthia Addai-Robinson as Marybeth Medina.

Released in October 2016, the film had a production budget of about 44 million dollars and took in roughly 155 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 394,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.1 from more than 7,500 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 286 reviews places it noticeably below the audience scores, which point to a warmer response from viewers than from reviewers.
