The Royal Tailor

Set during the Joseon dynasty, The Royal Tailor centres on the Sanguiwon, the royal workshop responsible for dressing the court. Jo Dol-suk, the most respected tailor in the kingdom, has risen from humble origins to lead it, and he treats tradition and strict rules as the foundation of his craft. Into this ordered world comes Lee Gong-jin, a naturally gifted and free-spirited designer who works by instinct and cares little for rank or convention. After the nobleman Pan-soo brings him to the palace, Gong-jin is asked to mend a royal garment commissioned by Queen Jeongseong for the new king's enthronement ceremony. His fresh approach attracts the Queen's notice and sets him on a path that puts him at odds with Dol-suk.

The film was directed by Lee Won-suk, arriving in 2014 between Killing Romance in 2023 and Lovely Death in 2026, from a screenplay by Lee Byoung-hak. Han Suk-kyu plays Dol-suk and Go Soo plays Gong-jin, with Park Shin-hye as the Queen, Yoo Yeon-seok as King Yeong-jo, Lee Yu-bi as Royal Concubine Soui and Ma Dong-seok as Pan-soo, among a credited cast of 21. It runs 127 minutes and was released on 24 December 2014. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 34 votes, a modest sample that indicates a small but positive audience response.
