Shin Godzilla
Short description
Shin Godzilla begins with an incident in the tunnels beneath the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and a deserted yacht in the bay, which sets off a chain of emergencies that Japan's agencies initially treat as a natural disaster. When a gigantic creature rises from the water and carves a path of destruction through the city, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Rando Yaguchi becomes convinced that an unknown organism is responsible. As the military proves unable to stop it, he assembles an improvised team of civil servants and volunteers who work around bureaucratic obstacles to identify what the creature is made of and where it came from, with help from US special envoy Kayoko Ann Patterson. The creature was created by radioactive contamination, and the effort to stop it becomes a race against time.
The film was directed by Hideaki Anno, who also wrote the screenplay, and by Shinji Higuchi; it is the eleventh of fifteen films Anno has directed in chronological order. Anno's previous film was Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (2012), and his next was Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (2021). The cast includes Hiroki Hasegawa as Rando Yaguchi, Satomi Ishihara as Kayoko Ann Patterson, Yutaka Takenouchi as the Prime Minister's special advisor Hideki Akasaka, Kengo Kora, Satoru Matsuo and Mikako Ichikawa, with 58 credited cast members and 160 credited crew.
Released in July 2016, the Japanese production was made for about 15 million USD and earned roughly 78 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.7/10 from 74 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.2/10 from around 1,650 votes, indicating that general viewers responded somewhat more warmly than critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mansai Nomura, a Kyogen theater actor, performed Godzilla's movements in the suit connected to motion capture equipment. To slow down his movements, a 10-kilogram weight was attached to the actor's suit. Nomura himself used elements of Japanese dance in some of the movements.
- Directors Kazuo Hara, Isshin Inudo, Matsuo Suzuki, Akira Ogata, Shinya Tsukamoto, and – in a photograph – Kihachi Okamoto (1923-2005) make cameo appearances.
- Sharla In Japan, a popular YouTube blogger, served as the English language coach.
- The most difficult thing for Satomi Ishihara, who played the special representative of the US President, was learning to speak English. The actress only found out she was to play an American when she passed the audition.
- In the film, people encounter Godzilla for the first time on November 3rd. On the same day in 1954, the very first film about Godzilla directed by Ishiro Honda was released in Japan.
