Ghost in the Shell

In a near-future city where cybernetic implants are commonplace, a young woman is saved from a fatal accident and rebuilt as a synthetic body with a human mind. She becomes Major Mira Killian, the leading operative of Section 9, a government task force that pursues the most dangerous cybercriminals. When a hacker begins targeting the developers of the technology that made her, she is assigned to stop him, and the investigation pushes her to question the official account of her own origins.

The film is a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga and anime franchise about Major Motoko Kusanagi, directed by Rupert Sanders. It followed his debut D-Minus and Snow White and the Huntsman, and came before The Crow. Scarlett Johansson plays the Major, with Takeshi Kitano as her section chief Aramaki, Pilou Asbæk as her partner Batou, Michael Pitt as the hacker Kuze and Juliette Binoche as the scientist Ouelet. Ehren Kruger, Jamie Moss and William Wheeler wrote the screenplay, and Avi Arad was among the producers.

Made for around 110 million dollars, the film took in roughly 170 million worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 239,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from more than 8,000. A critics' score of 5.5 out of 10 from 298 reviews places it close to the audience figures, with both falling in middling territory.
