Set during the 1973 military coup in Chile, Colonia follows Lena, a young German flight attendant, and her boyfriend Daniel, a journalist. When the new regime's secret police seize Daniel, Lena is released while he is taken to a remote settlement in the south of the country. Officially a charitable mission led by the preacher Paul Schäfer, Colonia Dignidad is in reality a closed sect that collaborates with the dictatorship, and no one who enters it comes out. To reach Daniel, Lena joins the community undercover, hoping to find him and escape with him.
Florian Gallenberger directed and co-wrote the film with Torsten Wenzel, placing it second in his filmography after John Rabe and before As Green As It Gets, The Turncoat and Perfect Match. Emma Watson plays Lena and Daniel Brühl plays Daniel, with Michael Nyqvist as Schäfer, Richenda Carey as Gisela, Vicky Krieps as Ursel and Jeanne Werner as Doro. The production involved companies in Germany, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg and France.
Made for about 14 million USD, the film returned roughly 4 million USD worldwide. Audiences received it far more warmly than reviewers: it holds 7/10 on IMDb from around 60,000 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from about 2,000 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 4.4/10 from 49 reviews.
