Short description
Set shortly before the events of the original Star Wars film, Rogue One follows a group of unlikely rebels who come together for a mission against the Galactic Empire. At its centre is Jyn Erso, a young woman with a criminal record whose father, a scientist, was forced to help build the Empire's planet-destroying battle station, the Death Star. When word reaches the Rebel Alliance that the station exists and that its plans may hold a weakness, Jyn joins forces with intelligence officer Cassian Andor and a small team of fighters, including the reprogrammed droid K-2SO and the blind warrior Chirrut Imwe, to steal those plans from an Imperial archive. The mission is dangerous and the rebels are divided over whether to attempt it, while the Empire's ruthless weapons director Orson Krennic and the Sith lord Darth Vader stand in their way.
The film was directed by Gareth Edwards, his fourth feature after End Day, Monsters and Godzilla, and was written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy. Felicity Jones leads the cast as Jyn, with Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Ben Mendelsohn in supporting roles. Its 177 credited cast and 185 credited crew reflect the scale of the production, which had a budget of 200 million USD and went on to take 1.06 billion USD worldwide, a large return on that investment.
Audience response has been positive, with a rating of 7.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 751,000 votes and 7.5 out of 10 on TMDB. A film critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 459 reviews places it broadly in line with those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Principal photography began in early August 2015 in London. Scenes on the planet Scarif were filmed on the Laamu Atoll in the Maldives, and filming also took place in Iceland and Jordan.
- To create the necessary atmosphere, director Gareth Edwards and cinematographer Greg Fraser dusted off lenses that were used in the 1970s and installed them in modern digital cameras.
- With appropriate computer processing, Alan Tudyk played the role of one of the droids.
- It is claimed that Joel Edgerton, Dominic West, Mark Strong, Taylor Kitsch, Joel Kinnaman, Sam Worthington, Charlie Hunnam, and Gerard Butler auditioned for various roles in the film.
- Costume designer David Crossman stated that the film utilized some original costumes from 'Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope' (1977), 'Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back' (1980), and 'Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi' (1983).
- Jimmy Smits returns as Bail Organa, a role he previously played in 'Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones' (2002) and 'Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith' (2005).
- The idea for the film came from John Knoll, head of visual effects at ILM. He received a mention in the credits as one of the story authors and also served as an executive producer of the film.

- Many fans will recognize the rebel base on the planet Yavin 4, which first appeared on screen in "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope." Due to financial constraints, Lucas was only able to build part of the base. He created the scale using the visual effects available at the time. The creators of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" were able to afford to build the rebel base in its entirety. The film crew visited the legendary location – the original set for planet Yavin 4 at Cardington Airfield in the UK. The enormous hangars allowed the artists and set designers to create a full-scale base on Yavin 4. The site measures approximately 106 meters in length and 61 meters in width.
- Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara, and Kate Mara auditioned for the role of the main character. The role went to Felicity Jones.
- James Earl Jones once again voiced Darth Vader in the film.
- The Yavin 4 set in the hangar was built and decorated on all sides, and even the off-camera crew had to be dressed in costumes. The same scheme was used on the Jedha city set, although the director tried to film as many scenes as possible on location to make the environment more realistic. Even where a chroma key was required, sets were built. Everything was done to make the actors feel like they were in a real world.
- The decorative Maldives were built on an abandoned airbase in Bovingdon, which had been disused for over half a century. All it took was adding some sand and palm trees. 2000 tons of sand and 60 palm trees were brought from Spain for the future filming location, along with other plants from the UK. Recycled water was used to create the decorative lagoons. During filming, over 798,700 liters of water were used, subsequently treated, and returned to a huge 30x60 meter tank. Once the decorative Maldives were completed, measurements were taken. The set was 213 meters long and 152 meters wide, totaling more than three hectares.
- Genevieve O'Reilly reprises her role as Mon Mothma, which she previously played in 'Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith' (2005).
- Anthony Daniels appeared in a cameo role as the droid C-3PO, becoming the only actor to appear in all 7 released episodes of the saga, as well as in "Rogue One".
- This is the first film in the 'Star Wars' saga for which John Williams did not compose the music.
- The character Jyn Erso's name is believed to be a reference to Jan Ors from the video game Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995). In the game, Ors and Kyle Katarn's first mission is to obtain the blueprints for the "Death Star".
- The director wanted the film's unusual creatures to fit organically into a realistic world. Therefore, they were treated on set exactly like regular actors, despite the fact that the makeup and prosthetics team had already applied layers of dust, soot, sweat, and slime to their faces. No one paid attention to these details.
- Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez were contenders for the main male role.
- Excluding the television film 'Star Wars Holiday Special', this is the eighth film in the 'Star Wars' cinematic saga.
- When building the sacred city of Jedha, the production designer drew inspiration from images of ancient Jerusalem and the Israeli fortress of Masada. In addition, photographs of Paris during World War II also had an influence.
- One of the film's significant characters, Governor Wilhuff Tarkin, was created using computer animation based on the performance of British actor Guy Henry, as Peter Cushing, who played Tarkin in the 1977 film "A New Hope," died in 1994, and it was decided to create a computer model that visually resembled Cushing as closely as possible. Similarly, Norwegian actress Ingvild Deila played a cameo role as Princess Leia Organa, and computer graphics were used to give the image the features of a young Carrie Fisher, who played the role in the 1977 film. Henry voiced the role of Tarkin, while archival recordings of Fisher's voice were used for the small role of Princess Leia, even though the actress was still alive at the time of filming.
