Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Short description
Diary of a Wimpy Kid follows Greg Heffley, a middle schooler who is convinced he is destined for fame but must first get through the daily trials of his first year at a new school. Alongside his best friend Rowley Jefferson, Greg tries one scheme after another to become popular, while dealing with bullies, an assigned seat on the cafeteria floor, his older brother Rodrick, and a piece of cheese on the playground that everyone avoids. The story unfolds through Greg's journal, where he records his plans, his family life and his misadventures.
The film is directed by Thor Freudenthal, following his 2009 feature Hotel for Dogs. Jackie Filgo, Jeff Filgo and Gabe Sachs wrote the screenplay, and Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson produced. Zachary Gordon plays Greg, with Robert Capron as Rowley, Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris as his parents, Devon Bostick as Rodrick, and Chloë Grace Moretz as Angie Steadman. The production, a United Kingdom and United States co-production, cost about 15 million dollars and earned roughly 76 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response is mixed but positive: on IMDb the film holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 66,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 6.3 out of 10 from about 1,835 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 107 reviews places it below those audience scores, indicating a warmer reception among viewers than among reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Angie did not exist in Jeff Kinney's books (he is listed in the credits as the screenwriter). This character was invented specifically for the film adaptation and was played by Chloe Grace Moretz.
- The ice cream in the scene where Colin offers it to Rowley (played by Alex Ferris and Robert Capron, respectively) was made of mashed potatoes. This trick was used because real ice cream melted instantly under the spotlights.
- Steve Zahn wanted to participate in this project because he had read Jeff Kinney's books to his own children at one time.
- The school scenes for the main character were filmed in three different locations: the exterior was shot separately, classroom scenes were shot separately, and gym scenes were shot separately.
- The scene with Rachel Harris and the character played by Devon Bostick was filmed at night, although the plot takes place during the day. Artificial lighting was used for filming.
