The Blackcoat's Daughter

Two students at a Catholic girls' boarding school, Kat and Rose, are left behind when their parents fail to collect them for the winter break. The two are not friends, and they find themselves alone together on an emptied campus as a winter storm cuts the school off. Meanwhile, a young woman named Joan is travelling toward the same place, carrying a troubled past and an unclear connection to it. As Joan gets closer, Kat is troubled by disturbing visions, and Rose watches her classmate come under the influence of something unseen and hostile.

The Blackcoat's Daughter is a horror mystery directed and written by Oz Perkins, his second feature after I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, and it precedes Gretel & Hansel, Longlegs, Keeper and The Monkey. Emma Roberts plays Joan, with Kiernan Shipka as Kat and Lucy Boynton as Rose, supported by James Remar, Lauren Holly and Peter J. Gray among a cast of 28. It is a co-production between Canada, the United States and France, produced by Bryan Bertino, Robert Menzies and Rob Paris.

Released in 2017 and running 94 minutes, the film drew limited audiences, with roughly 32,000 votes on IMDb and about 800 on TMDB, both averaging 5.9 out of 10. A critics' score of 6.8 from 78 reviews places it above those audience figures, suggesting reviewers responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
