Wolf Warrior follows Leng Feng, a highly skilled marksman in the Chinese special forces whose independent streak puts him at odds with his superiors. When a raid on a drug lord's hideout goes wrong, he defies a direct order and ends up leaving his unit. His abilities earn him a place in the elite Wolf Warrior squad, where he trains alongside other soldiers and builds a team of his own. During what should be a routine exercise, the unit is ambushed by foreign mercenaries led by Tom Cat, who has a personal score to settle. The trainees are drawn into a real fight for survival against well-armed professionals.
The film is the second feature directed by Wu Jing, after Legendary Assassin in 2008 and before Wolf Warrior 2 in 2017. Wu Jing also stars as Leng Feng and co-wrote the screenplay with Dong Qun and Liu Yi, and produced alongside Ji Daoqing and Uncle Ba Suk. Scott Adkins plays the mercenary leader Tom Cat, with Yu Nan, Ni Dahong, Shi Zhaoqi and Zhou Xiaoou among the credited cast of 22. Made on a budget of about 12 million US dollars, it earned roughly 81 million worldwide, a strong return that established the series. On IMDb it holds 5.3 out of 10 from about 6,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.2 from around 300 votes, suggesting a modest but real audience following.
