Transformers: The Last Knight
Short description
Transformers: The Last Knight continues the war between humans and the giant alien robots, with Optimus Prime absent from Earth. The key to preventing disaster is said to lie in the long-hidden history of the Transformers on this planet. A small group comes together to act on it: Cade Yeager, the Autobot Bumblebee, a British lord, and an Oxford professor. What they uncover points to a struggle in which only one world can survive.
Michael Bay directed the film, the thirteenth in his directing career in chronological order, following 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi and preceding 6 Underground. The screenplay is by Ken Nolan, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, and the producers include Don Murphy, Ian Bryce and Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Mark Wahlberg returns as Cade Yeager, joined by Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel and Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus Prime. The production cost about 217 million dollars and took in roughly 605 million dollars worldwide, a return that is modest set against its cost.
Audience scores are middling: on IMDb it holds 5.2 out of 10 from about 185,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from around 6,900 votes. A critics' rating of 3.5 out of 10 from 254 reviews places it clearly below those audience figures. The film is 154 minutes long and was released in June 2017.
What's left behind the scenes
- Blenheim Palace was equipped to serve as the headquarters for the Nazis. This caused a storm of indignation among British war veterans.
- Screenwriter Matt Holloway is a huge fan of the series "Downton Abbey" (2010-2015). He once jokingly stated that the role of Cogman should be voiced by Jim Carter (who played Charles Carson in the series). Director and producer Michael Bay immediately signed Carter for the film.
- The scene of Sir Edmund Burton visiting 10 Downing Street was indeed filmed at the British Prime Minister's residence in October.
- Some scenes were filmed at Stonehenge. Director and producer Michael Bay wanted to film an explosion there, but did not receive permission, so a set of Stonehenge had to be built to film the explosion scene.
- The image of Megatron in this film is based on Cyclonus from the “Transformers” cartoon (1984-1987) – both characters have helmets adorned with horn-like protrusions and both transform into fighter jets.
- The original version of the film was reportedly much longer, and approximately an hour of footage was cut for theatrical release. The filmmakers admitted that there were production difficulties with this film, resulting in a lot of material being planned and shot that never made it into the final version.
- Filming of the movie began in Cuba in the spring of 2016. It was the second Hollywood film to be shot on the territory of this state.
- Quintessa's appearance is based on Alpha Q from the "Transformers: Energon" cartoon (2004), where he was voiced by Trevor Devall (the upper part of the torso is humanoid, and tentacles instead of legs), and her face is similar to that of Quintesson in the "Transformers" cartoon (1984-1987) – the face and headdress. The headdress features elements of Autobot and Decepticon insignia, emphasizing her involvement in the creation of Transformers.
- Cogman is a Headmaster – a Transformer composed of two bodies (each of which has two modes of operation, each performing its own role).
- The film was shot in Iceland, England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Cuba, Michigan, Arizona, Namibia, and California. Some episodes of the film were shot at Stonehenge.
