Ted Bundy
Short description
Ted Bundy is a crime horror film about the notorious American serial killer, following him from his days as a seemingly ordinary law student in the Pacific Northwest to a killing spree that stretched across several states. Outwardly charming and well liked, Bundy hides a compulsion that drives him to abduct, assault and murder young women while evading suspicion; as the bodies accumulate, investigators struggle to connect the crimes to a man nobody wants to suspect. The story also touches on his capture, his escape from custody, his trial and his execution.
The film was directed by Matthew Bright, who wrote the screenplay with Stephen Johnston. It followed Freeway (1996) and Tiptoes (2002), and was Bright's third feature as director. Michael Reilly Burke plays Bundy, with Boti Bliss, Tracey Walter, Deborah Offner, Tom Savini and Tiffany Shepis among the credited cast of twenty-three. Made on a budget of about one million dollars, it was released on 2 August 2002 and runs 99 minutes.
Reception was modest: on IMDb it holds 5.8/10 from around 8,600 votes, and on TMDB it also holds 5.8/10, from roughly 177 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2/10 from 23 reviews sits slightly below those audience scores, indicating a mixed response across all three measures.
What's left behind the scenes
- Bundy was sentenced to death for 4 murders. Ted Bundy committed his murders between 1974 and 1978 and was executed in the electric chair in 1989.
- The role in the film was offered to Cameron Bright, but neither he nor, as it turned out, his mother wanted to be associated with a serial killer.
- In the party scene where Ted and his girlfriend Liz are present, a girl approaches Liz, introduces herself as Beverly, and says she worked with Ted at a crisis center. This is a clear reference to Ann Rule (1931-2015), a writer who actually worked with Ted Bundy (1946-1989) at a crisis center in Seattle in the early 1970s. Furthermore, it is known that Rule actually met and chatted with Bundy's girlfriend at a Christmas party once. She later wrote a book about Bundy and the murders he committed.
- Ted Bundy is arrested when he breaks into someone else's car after escaping from Aspen. In reality, he was arrested when he was already driving the stolen car. Moreover, all three times he was arrested, it happened while he was driving a vehicle. And he was initially detained because he was a terrible driver.
