Short description

Oscar and his sister Linda are recent arrivals in Tokyo. He gets by selling drugs, while she dances at a nightclub. After their parents died in a car crash, the two grew dependent on each other, and Oscar has promised never to leave her. During a police raid on a bar, he is shot; as he lies dying, his spirit refuses to depart the world of the living. What follows is his passage beyond death, moving between his own past, the present, and what lies ahead for Linda. His visions of the neon city grow increasingly chaotic and nightmarish as past, present and future merge into a single hallucination.

Gaspar Noé wrote and directed the film, his fifth feature, arriving between Destricted and Love in a filmography that began with Carne in 1991 and continued through I Stand Alone and Irreversible. Nathaniel Brown plays Oscar and Paz de la Huerta plays Linda, with Cyril Roy, Olly Alexander, Masato Tanno and Ed Spear in supporting roles. The production was a European and Japanese co-production made for about 13 million dollars.

Audience reactions split along the usual lines for the director: on IMDb the film sits at 7.2 from roughly 94,000 votes, and on TMDB at 7.3 from around 2,000 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.9 from 97 reviews. Those figures suggest a film that satisfies viewers somewhat more than reviewers, and one that has found a dedicated following rather than broad consensus.
