Death at a Funeral is an American comedy about a family gathering at the home of Aaron and his wife Michelle to bury Aaron's father. Aaron, who still lives in his parents' house while he and Michelle save for a place of their own, has to keep the ceremony on track even as it slides steadily out of control. A mix-up over the body, an accidental dose of the wrong drug given to a nervous relative, and the arrival of Aaron's successful younger brother Ryan from New York turn a solemn occasion into a day of confrontations, threats and long-hidden resentments among the mourners.
Neil LaBute directed the film, which sits between Lakeview Terrace (2008) and Some Velvet Morning (2013) in a career that began with Nurse Betty (2000). Dean Craig wrote the screenplay, and Chris Rock, William Horberg and Laurence Malkin produced; Rock also stars as Aaron, heading a cast that includes Martin Lawrence as Ryan, Zoe Saldaña, Tracy Morgan, Regina Hall and James Marsden.
Released in April 2010, the film had a budget of 21 million dollars and took about 49 million dollars worldwide. Ratings were moderate: it holds 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb from over 52,000 votes and 5.9 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 1,100 votes, while a critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 138 reviews sits close to those audience scores, indicating broadly similar, mixed reactions from both groups.
