The Clan

Set in Argentina during the early 1980s, The Clan centres on the Puccio family, who appear to be ordinary, comfortably middle-class residents of a Buenos Aires suburb. Behind that respectable surface, the household is led by the patriarch Arquímedes, who organises kidnappings and collects ransoms from the victims' relatives. Other family members are complicit to varying degrees, and the household lives off the money the abductions bring in. The eldest son, Alejandro, is a rugby player whose popularity and public standing shield the family from suspicion and help his father choose targets. When Alejandro begins to question what the family is doing, his doubts put the whole operation at risk and set him against his father.

The film is directed by Pablo Trapero, who wrote the screenplay with Esteban Student and Julian Loyola. It followed Crane World and Venice 70: Future Reloaded in his filmography and came before & Sons. Guillermo Francella plays Arquímedes and Peter Lanzani plays Alejandro, with Gastón Cocchiarale, Franco Masini, Giselle Motta and Antonia Bengoechea among the credited cast of 24. Produced by INCAA, Telefe, El Deseo and K & S Films, with Esther García and Agustín and Pedro Almodóvar among the producers, it was made for about 4 million USD and took roughly 20 million USD worldwide, a strong return.
