Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Short description
Four teenagers serving detention at their high school come across an old video game console loaded with a title they have never heard of: Jumanji. As soon as they start playing, they are pulled out of the real world and into the game's jungle setting, each trapped in the body of an adult avatar that is nothing like them. Spencer, the shy one, becomes a strong explorer; the football player Fridge turns into a small, brainy zoologist; the popular Bethany ends up as an older male professor; and the awkward Martha takes on the role of a skilled fighter. To get home, they must survive the game's hazards long enough to finish it, or remain stuck inside it.
Jake Kasdan directed the film, the sixth feature in the sequence that began with Zero Effect in 1998 and continued through Bad Teacher and Sex Tape. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan play the avatars, with Rhys Darby and Bobby Cannavale in supporting roles. Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner and Chris McKenna wrote the screenplay, and the credited production involved 47 cast members and 163 crew.
Made for about 90 million dollars, the film took close to a billion dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from roughly 499,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8/10 from about 14,800 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.1/10 from 235 reviews, so audiences rated it a little higher than critics did. Kasdan returned to the series with Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming took place in Hawaii.
- The statues in the jungle are copies of the game pieces from the original film 'Jumanji' (Joe Johnston, 1995).
- Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart regularly and actively warmed up and trained, but Karen Gillan spent the most time with the stunt performers, learning her movements for the fight scenes, as her character is a martial arts specialist.
- To film the scene with the albino rhinoceros, the actors involved in the project spent several days suspended from a full-scale helicopter mock-up on a special effects stage, at a height of seven meters.
- The film is dedicated to the memory of Robin Williams (1951-2014), who played the main role in the first “Jumanji”.
- There is a sign in the camp that reads “Alan Parrish Was Here,” and it is claimed that this was once Parrish’s own camp. That was the name of the character played by Robin Williams (1951-2014) in “Jumanji,” who was stuck in the game for 26 years.
