Maudie

Maudie tells the story of Maud Lewis, a woman in Nova Scotia living with a severe form of arthritis that progressively deforms her bones. Eager to support herself and leave behind an overprotective family, she answers an advertisement placed by Everett Lewis, a reclusive fish seller looking for a live-in housekeeper. Their arrangement begins as a difficult, mismatched coexistence, but it gradually deepens into a loving partnership in which Everett encourages Maud to pursue the painting she has kept hidden. Her simple, cheerful pictures eventually bring her recognition across Canada as one of the country's best-known folk artists.

The film is directed by Aisling Walsh, made between her earlier Sinners and An Inspector Calls, and was written by Sherry White. Based on a true story, it stars Sally Hawkins as Maud Lewis and Ethan Hawke as Everett Lewis, with supporting roles for Gabrielle Rose, Billy MacLellan, Zachary Bennett and Kari Matchett. Running 115 minutes, it was produced by Irish and Canadian companies.

It earned about 6 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from over twenty thousand votes, while on TMDB it rates 7.8 from a smaller number of voters. A film critics' rating of 7.2 from 153 reviews places it close to those audience scores.
