Rebirth of Mothra follows a family caught up in an ancient conflict. When logging work on a Japanese island disturbs a set of magical seals buried in the ground, a three-headed dragon called Desghidorah is released. The creature had previously wiped out life on Mars, and it now begins draining the life energy from its surroundings on Earth. The Elias, small twin fairies named Moll and Lora, summon the giant moth Mothra to stop it, while their estranged sister Belvera works against them.
The film was directed by Okihiro Yoneda from a screenplay by Masumi Suetani, and produced by Hiroaki Kitayama and Tomoyuki Tanaka for Toho Pictures. It is a Japanese production running 104 minutes and mixing action, adventure, family and fantasy elements. Megumi Kobayashi and Sayaka Yamaguchi play the fairy sisters Moll and Lora, with Aki Hano as Belvera. Kazuki Futami, Maya Fujisawa and Hitomi Takahashi appear as the Goto family, whose members become involved in the struggle.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.8 from around 1,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from a much smaller pool of 51 votes. The two figures are close, suggesting a modest but comparable reception from both audiences. The film was released in Japan in December 1996.
