Short description

Set in Gujarat during the 1980s and 1990s, the film follows Raees Alam, a bootlegger who rises from nothing to build a criminal operation in a state where alcohol is banned. A shrewd and ambitious man, he becomes one of the most powerful figures in the region, both respected and feared by those around him. His world is upended by Jaideep Ambalal Majmudar, a determined police officer who makes it his mission to shut down the illegal liquor trade and bring Raees to justice.

The film was directed by Rahul Dholakia, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was released in January 2017. It is the first of two features he has directed to date, followed by Agni in 2024. Shah Rukh Khan plays the title role, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Majmudar, Mahira Khan as Aasiya, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Raees's friend and confidante Sadiq. It was produced by Gauri Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.

The production had a budget of about 46 million dollars. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 266 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.3 out of 10 from 13 reviews. The audience score sits somewhat above the critical one, indicating a warmer response from viewers than from reviewers. The film runs 143 minutes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Following a period of tense relations between Pakistan and India in 2016, filming in India was banned for various Pakistani actors. Pressure was placed on the filmmakers to replace Pakistani actress Mahira Khan, but the film's producer, Farhan Akhtar, categorically rejected all such demands.
  • The film "The Richest Man" is set in Gujarat (a state in western India); the actors speak Gujarati (a language of the Indo-Aryan group of the Indo-European language family), and the characters' costumes also reflect this influence.
  • At one point, Farhan Akhtar approached Fardeen Khan with an offer to act in the film, but he declined, and the role went to Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
  • Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Leone were participating in a promotional campaign on a train from Mumbai to Delhi when a man named Farid Khan Sherani—a fan of Shah Rukh Khan and an activist for the Samajwadi Party (a regional political party that positions itself as a democratic socialist party)—was injured in a crowd at one of the railway stations. He later passed away in the hospital from his injuries. The actor expressed his sincere condolences to the family.
