A Kid in King Arthur's Court
Short description
Calvin Fuller, a teenager from Southern California, is pulled through a crack opened in the ground during an earthquake and ends up in the medieval kingdom of Camelot. The wizard Merlin has summoned him there deliberately, hoping the boy can help King Arthur hold on to his crown against the schemes of the treacherous Lord Belasco. Calvin's modern know-how and his new friendships at court become his main assets as he tries to find his place among knights and princesses while working out how to get home.
The film was directed by Michael Gottlieb, the fourth feature he made following Mannequin, The Shrimp on the Barbie and Mr. Nanny. Robert L. Levy and Michael Part wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Thomas Ian Nicholas as Calvin, with Joss Ackland as King Arthur, Art Malik as Lord Belasco, Daniel Craig as Master Kane, and Kate Winslet and Paloma Baeza as the princesses Sarah and Katey. Twenty-three performers are credited.
Walt Disney Pictures, Tapestry Films and Trimark Pictures produced the 89-minute adventure comedy, which was released in August 1995. A film critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 22 reviews sits below the audience scores of 4.8 out of 10 on IMDb and 4.9 out of 10 on TMDB, which indicate similarly muted reactions from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sean Penn was originally cast as Kane's teacher but left the project due to serious disagreements with director Michael Gottlieb. After the film's release, the actor sharply criticized it, stating that the film had considerable potential that ultimately remained unrealized. Following his departure, the role went to then-relatively unknown British actor Daniel Craig.
- Paloma Baeza, who played King Arthur's younger daughter, Princess Katie, is actually six months older than Kate Winslet, who played the role of the elder daughter, Princess Sarah. Both are five years older than Thomas Ian Nicholas, who played Kelvin in the film.
- The filming of the majority of the film, which takes place in the sixth century at King Arthur's court, took place in Budapest and its surroundings. The baseball game scenes were filmed on the sports field of the American London Central High School, located in the town of High Wycombe near London. Students at the school were allowed to visit the set and audition for a number of minor roles.
- The film's release in American theaters was accompanied by the Disney short film "Runaway Brain" (1995), which later received an Oscar nomination.
