Four Lions
Short description
Four Lions follows a small group of British Muslims who decide to carry out a terrorist attack. Their ambitions are grand, but their abilities are not: they argue over what to target, bungle their preparations, and struggle even to agree on a plan. Omar, the group's determined leader, brings back ideas from a training camp in Pakistan, while the bomb maker is nervous, one recruit is gentle and easily led, and another is eager to fight everyone around him. The clash between their lofty intentions and their incompetence drives the film.
Chris Morris directed the film, his first, and wrote it with Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain and Simon Blackwell. Riz Ahmed plays Omar, with Nigel Lindsay, Kayvan Novak, Adeel Akhtar, Arsher Ali and Preeya Kalidas in the main roles, part of a credited cast of 27 and a crew of 96. The production, backed by companies including Film4 and Warp Films, cost around 4 million dollars and took about 5 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 91,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from about 1,300 votes, a narrower sample. A critics' score of 7.4 from 135 reviews places it slightly above both audience figures. Morris returned to directing nine years later with The Day Shall Come.
What's left behind the scenes
- The Pakistani market scenes were actually filmed in the Indian city of Hyderabad, which can be understood from the vehicle license plates.
- The final scenes in London were actually filmed in Sheffield.
- During the end credits, the audience learns that the bazooka shot fired by Omar in the training camp in Pakistan killed Osama bin Laden (1957-2011). In reality, the notorious terrorist was killed by a group of American special forces. This happened in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, almost a year before the release of the black comedy "Four Lions" on May 7, 2012.
