Short description
Olive Penderghast is an unremarkable high school student until a small lie about her weekend changes how everyone sees her. Word spreads quickly through the school, and she finds herself known for a reputation she never actually earned. Rather than deny it, she leans into the role, and the attention that follows turns the school's gossip against her. Her favorite teacher and the guidance counselor grow concerned, while her parents offer their own unusual brand of support and a longstanding crush becomes an ally as she tries to take control of the story being told about her.
The film is directed by Will Gluck, whose second feature it is, following Fired Up! and preceding Friends with Benefits and later films including Annie and the Peter Rabbit titles. Bert V. Royal wrote the screenplay, drawn from Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, and Gluck produced alongside Zanne Devine. Emma Stone leads as Olive, with Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Dan Byrd, Thomas Haden Church and Patricia Clarkson among the cast. Made for about 8 million dollars, it took in roughly 75 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from over 442,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from around 7,550, while its critics' rating of 7.1 from 193 reviews sits close to the audience scores.
