Short description
Your Highness is a fantasy comedy about two princes of a kingdom. Fabious is the accomplished older brother who embarks on heroic quests, while Thadeous is arrogant and idle, content to spend his days drinking and avoiding responsibility. When Fabious's fiancée, Belladonna, is abducted by the sorcerer Leezar, the king issues an ultimatum to Thadeous: help rescue her or lose his position. Reluctantly, he joins his brother on the journey, accompanied by Isabel, a warrior with her own reasons for coming along. The brothers face dangerous creatures and treacherous knights before they can reach Belladonna.
David Gordon Green directed the film, the third of the fourteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Pineapple Express and preceding The Sitter. Ben Best and Danny McBride wrote the screenplay, and Scott Stuber produced. Danny McBride plays Thadeous, with James Franco as Fabious, Natalie Portman as Isabel, Zooey Deschanel as Belladonna, Justin Theroux as Leezar and Toby Jones as Julie, among a credited cast of thirty.
Released in April 2011 and running 102 minutes, the film mixed action, adventure, comedy, fantasy and romance. Made for a budget of 50 million US dollars, it took about 28 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 181 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 1,492 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The screenplay was written by Ben Best and Danny McBride, and the dialogue throughout the film was largely the result of improvisation. According to director David Gordon Green, the script was rarely brought to the set; only a brief summary of the plot and hastily written notes were used.
- The idea for the film originated in a game that Danny McBride and Ben Best played while goofing around on set. One would come up with a movie title, and the other would try to immediately suggest a suitable plot, taking turns. When the title *Pineapple Express* came up, the proposed plot was: 'It's about a prince who fights dragons while high.'
- Natalie Portman admitted that she agreed to work with David Gordon Green only because she wasn't sure if a major studio would approve Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller, *Black Swan*. She signed on to *Pineapple Express* intending to use the fee from *Black Swan* to fund the comedy if necessary. However, permission to film *Black Swan* was obtained without issue, and Portman found herself bound by contractual obligations, forcing her to participate in *Pineapple Express*.
