Grown Ups follows five longtime friends who return to a lake house for a Fourth of July weekend with their wives and children after their former high school basketball coach dies. The men won a championship together decades earlier, and the gathering is meant to honor the coach and mark that anniversary. Once reunited, they fall back into old habits and old rivalries, while their families adjust to sharing a holiday together. The reunion raises the question of whether growing older has actually made any of them more mature.
Dennis Dugan directed the film, the tenth of the fourteen he has directed, coming between You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Just Go with It. Adam Sandler stars as Lenny Feder and co-wrote the screenplay with Fred Wolf; Sandler and Jack Giarraputo produced. The cast includes Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider as the other friends, with Salma Hayek Pinault among the credited ensemble of fifty-six.
Released in June 2010, the comedy cost about 80 million dollars and took in roughly 271 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 167 reviews, while on TMDB it averages 6.4 out of 10 from 6,887 votes, so audiences rated it considerably higher than critics did.
