Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Uncle Boonmee, a beekeeper in his sixties, is dying of kidney failure and chooses to spend his remaining days in the countryside in northern Thailand, cared for by relatives. One evening at dinner he is joined by the ghost of his deceased wife and by his lost son, who has returned home in a non-human form, appearing as a dark, hairy figure with glowing red eyes. Reflecting on what may have caused his illness, Boonmee sets out through the jungle with his family toward a cave in the mountains, the place where, by his own account, his first life began. Along the way his earlier existences press in on him.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul wrote and directed the film, which followed Tropical Malady in his filmography. Thanapat Saisaymar plays Boonmee, with Jenjira Pongpas as Jen, Sakda Kaewbuadee as Tong, Natthakarn Aphaiwonk as Huay, Geerasak Kulhong as Boonsong and Wallapa Mongkolprasert as the Princess. Michael Weber, Luis Miñarro and Hans W. Geißendörfer produced the international co-production. It runs 114 minutes and mixes drama with fantasy.

Critical and audience responses diverge. On IMDb the film rates 6.7 from 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 from 438 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 7.9 from 103 reviews. The film was released in June 2010.
