Phil and Debbie Winslow move their family from Kansas to Orange County, California, and their oversized, accident-prone Great Dane, Marmaduke, comes along. The household also includes Carlos, a Russian Blue cat who becomes the dog's companion in mischief. In his new surroundings, Marmaduke tries to fit in with the local dogs, a social scene divided between a polished pedigree set and a scruffier crowd, and his attempts to impress the fashionable collie Beverly put his friendship with Lucy and her group at risk.
The film is a live-action family comedy directed by Tom Dey, written by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio and produced by John Davis. It is the fourth of the six features Dey has directed, arriving between Failure to Launch and Wedding Season. Owen Wilson voices Marmaduke, with Emma Stone as Mazie, George López as Carlos and Steve Coogan as Raisin among the voice cast; Caroline Sunshine and Finley Jacobsen play the Winslow children. The credited cast numbers 48.
Made for about 50 million US dollars, Marmaduke took in roughly 84 million US dollars worldwide, a modest return. Audiences rate it poorly, with 4.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 19,000 votes and 5.3 out of 10 on TMDB from about 800 votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 101 reviews places it below even those viewer scores.
