Short description

Jack Harris is a family man and a successful businessman who prides himself on solving other people's problems. When two computer specialists, Wayne Beering and Buck Dolby, come to him for help, he learns that they have built an online payment system and used it to sell adult films over the internet. They owe money to Russian backers, and Jack settles the debt and takes a share of the business. The venture grows into the first paid adult website, and Jack finds himself wealthy but surrounded by conmen, mobsters, porn performers and federal agents, all while trying to keep his marriage and his family intact.

Middle Men is a crime comedy-drama directed by George Gallo, who wrote the screenplay with Andy Weiss. It was released in 2009 as the fifth of the ten films Gallo has directed, following My Mom's New Boyfriend, and is produced by William Sherak, Jason Shuman and Christopher Mallick. Luke Wilson plays Jack, with Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht as his business partners, James Caan as Jerry Haggerty, Jacinda Barrett as Jack's wife Diana and Kevin Pollak as Curt Allmans, among a credited cast of 52. Made for about 22 million dollars, it drew a 6.8 rating on IMDb from over 38,000 votes and a 6.5 on TMDB, while a critics' score of 5.6 from 52 reviews sits below both audience figures.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the beginning of the film, when Wayne and Buck are just creating their program in 1997, the Windows XP interface is clearly visible on their computer, even though it didn't come out until 4 years later, in 2001.
  • The film's screenplay is based on real events from the life of one of the producers, Christopher Mullick. He still owns the internet company mentioned in the movie.
