Short description
Tamara Drewe returns to the English village where she grew up to deal with the house she has inherited now that her mother has died. As a teenager she was awkward and teased for her looks; London has since given her a new nose, a newspaper column and a confidence that turns heads. Her arrival unsettles the place, especially a writers' retreat run by a celebrated novelist and his patient wife, where a resident academic, a visiting rock drummer and a local handyman all take an interest in her. Gossipy schoolgirls and long-standing frustrations among the villagers push the situation towards farce.
Stephen Frears directed this British comedy, the seventeenth of the twenty-three features he has made in chronological order, arriving between Chéri and Lay the Favorite. Moira Buffini wrote the screenplay, and Gemma Arterton leads a cast of twenty-two credited performers that includes Roger Allam, Bill Camp, Dominic Cooper, Jessica Barden and Luke Evans.
Released in July 2010, the film took about 12 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a production backed by BBC Film, the UK Film Council, Ruby Films and WestEnd Films. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from around 491 votes — a small, self-selecting sample. Critics' reviews, 129 of them, average 6.3 out of 10, putting professional opinion slightly above the larger audience tally.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film can be considered a loose adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel (1840-1928). One of its characters writes a book about Hardy, and there is a photograph of Hardy in his office. Moreover, the film takes place in Dorset, where many of the writer’s works are set. At the beginning of the film, there is an advertisement that uses the title of Hardy’s novel “Far from the Madding Crowd” instead of a slogan.
- The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Posi Simmonds, which was, in turn, based on Thomas Hardy's novel “Far from the Madding Crowd” (1874).
