Winter's Bone

Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly looks after her younger brother and sister in the Ozark backwoods of Missouri while her mother lies ill and her father, a drug dealer, sits in jail. When he is released and then vanishes, the family's home is at risk: he had put it up as collateral for his bail, and if he fails to appear in court, the house and land will be taken. To keep her family from being turned out, Ree sets out to find him, moving through a closed rural community of rundown cabins and hardscrabble neighbours who answer her questions with silence and warnings rather than help.

Debra Granik directed and co-wrote the film with Anne Rosellini, who produced it alongside Alix Madigan. It was Granik's second feature, arriving eight years before her Leave No Trace. Jennifer Lawrence plays Ree, with John Hawkes as Teardrop, Dale Dickey as Merab and Garret Dillahunt as Sheriff Baskin among a credited cast of twenty-three. Made for a small budget of about two million dollars, the film took roughly fourteen million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 8.3 out of 10 from 178 reviews, while on TMDB its average is 6.8 out of 10 from around two thousand votes, a gap that places critics' assessments noticeably above the broader audience response.
