Amaia Salazar, a police inspector, is sent to the Baztán valley in Navarre to investigate the death of a teenage girl found by the river. The case resembles a killing from a month earlier, and the setting is Elizondo, the town where Amaia grew up and which she left behind. As she and her colleague Jonan Etxaide pursue a possible serial killer, local superstition points to the basajaun, a figure from Basque mythology said to guard the forest. Amaia's own childhood haunts her as she works.
Fernando González Molina directed the film, which followed Palm Trees in the Snow in his filmography. Luiso Berdejo wrote the screenplay, adapting Dolores Redondo's novel, and Marta Etura plays Amaia. Elvira Mínguez, Francesc Orella, Colin McFarlane, Susi Sánchez and Patricia López Arnaiz are also in the cast. The production, mounted by Nostromo Pictures with Atresmedia, ZDF and ARTE, had a budget of about five million dollars. On TMDB it holds a 6.5 rating from roughly 750 votes, a moderate score suggesting a mixed but engaged audience response. The film opened in March 2017 and runs 129 minutes.
It is the first of three films drawn from Redondo's Baztán trilogy, followed by The Legacy of the Bones and Offering to the Storm, both directed by González Molina.
