Short description
Marshall centres on Thurgood Marshall, the lawyer who would later become the first African American justice on the US Supreme Court, at the start of his career with the NAACP. Sent to conservative Connecticut in the early 1940s, he takes on the defence of Joseph Spell, a black chauffeur accused by his wealthy white employer of sexual assault and attempted murder. Barred from speaking in court by a segregationist judge, Marshall works alongside Sam Friedman, a young Jewish lawyer handling his first criminal case, as the two build a defence in a climate of racism and antisemitism.
The drama was directed by Reginald Hudlin, its screenplay written by Jacob Koskoff and Michael Koskoff. It sits between Serving Sara and the documentary The Black Godfather in Hudlin's filmography. Chadwick Boseman plays Marshall, with Josh Gad as Friedman and Kate Hudson as Eleanor Strubing; Sterling K. Brown, James Cromwell and Dan Stevens also appear.
Released in October 2017, the film runs 118 minutes. Made for about 12 million dollars, it took roughly 10 million worldwide. Audiences rate it 7.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 29,000 votes, and 7.3 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 707 votes, while the critics' score stands at 6.7 out of 10 from 145 reviews.

- In the final scene of the theatrical release, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, the parents of Trayvon Martin, appear on screen. Marshall died long before Martin was born.
- Marshall arrives at a genuine railway station in Buffalo, New York. In reality, the building has long been in disrepair, so the glazed windows shown in the film are the product of digital technology.
