Annabelle: Creation
Short description
Years after their young daughter died in an accident, doll maker Samuel Mullins and his wife Esther open their California farmhouse to Sister Charlotte and a group of girls whose orphanage has closed. Samuel sets two conditions for the new arrivals: his wife's room stays shut, and the locked room upstairs must never be opened. The girls soon find that a doll in the house, a creation of Samuel's, has marked them, and that something demonic works through it.
David F. Sandberg directed the film, his third feature after the 2016 horror Lights Out and a 2014 short of the same name; he later moved on to Shazam! and its sequel. Gary Dauberman wrote the screenplay, and James Wan and Peter Safran produced. The cast includes Stephanie Sigman as Sister Charlotte, Talitha Bateman as Janice, Lulu Wilson as Linda, Anthony LaPaglia as Samuel and Miranda Otto as Esther, with Grace Caroline Currey as Carol among 27 credited cast members. The film continues the Conjuring series as a follow-up to Annabelle (2014).
Made for a modest 15 million USD, the film took roughly 307 million USD worldwide, a large return on its budget. Audiences rate it close to 6.5/10 on IMDb from about 169,000 votes and 6.6/10 on TMDB from roughly 6,000 votes, while critics gave it 6.2/10 across 190 reviews, a slightly narrower spread between the two than is typical for the genre.
What's left behind the scenes
- The new "Annabelle" is already the fourth film in James Wan's horror cinematic universe and, at the same time, chronologically the very first film, preceding "The Conjuring."
- The house of the dollmaker Mullins and his wife is the same as Dolores’ house from the HBO television series “Westworld” (2016).
- In the photograph from Romania that Sister Charlotte shows Samuel, the demon nun Valak can be seen. The horror film “The Nun” by Corin Hardy was also filmed in Romania.
- The doll that the Higginses give to Janice when visiting her in the orphanage is an exact copy of Raggedy Ann. (This is a character from a series of children's books written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle. She was first created as a doll in 1915 and was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2002.)
- The doll that Annabelle, or rather Janis, holds at the end of the film bears a striking resemblance to the 'real' Annabelle doll. The latter was not used precisely because of its similarity to the doll shown in the films. The real doll looked exactly like this – it was made of cloth, not porcelain. It is still kept in the home of Lorraine Warren, a famous paranormal investigator, where it is shown to visitors.
