Echoes of the Rainbow

Echoes of the Rainbow follows the Law family, who run a small shoe shop in a working-class Hong Kong neighbourhood in the 1960s. The story is seen through the eyes of eight-year-old Big Ears, a mischievous, light-fingered boy whose older brother Desmond is a gifted runner and a model student, the pride of the household. While the parents scrape together money for Desmond's schooling, the family copes with the hardships of the era, and the film draws on director Alex Law Kai-Yui's own childhood.

The film was written and directed by Alex Law Kai-Yui, produced by Mabel Cheung, and was the second feature he directed, following 1:99 Shorts in 2003. Simon Yam and Sandra Ng play the parents, with Buzz Chung as Big Ears and Aarif Rahman as Desmond among a credited cast of 22. It runs 117 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.

Released in March 2010, the film took about 7 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from roughly 2,600 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 86 votes, so the two audiences are broadly in agreement despite the difference in scale.
