  • The film is based on Yukito Kishiro's manga "Gunnm" (1990-1995). In the US, the manga was published under the title "Battle Angel Alita".
  • Producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez considered four actresses for the lead role – Zendaya, Rosa Salazar, Maika Monroe, and Bella Thorne. Ultimately, Salazar was approved for the role.
  • Robert Rodriguez was suggested to consider Christoph Waltz for the role of Dr. Dyson Ido by their mutual friend Quentin Tarantino.
  • In early December 2005, Mali Finn Casting's website announced a call for actresses for the lead role in the film. It later turned out that there had been an error, and an actress was needed for a role in James Cameron's science fiction film "Avatar" (2009).
