Wicked
Short description
Wicked takes place in the land of Oz, long before Dorothy Gale arrives from Kansas. Elphaba, a young woman shunned for her unusual green skin, enrolls at Shiz University, where she is made to share a room with Glinda, a popular and privileged classmate. Despite their differences, the two form an unexpected friendship. As they come to know the Wizard of Oz, that bond is tested, and events push them toward the separate paths for which they are remembered.
The film adapts the first act of the Broadway musical, itself drawn from Gregory Maguire's novel. Jon M. Chu directed, working from a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox; it is the eleventh of the thirteen films he has directed in chronological order, following In the Heights and preceding Wicked: For Good. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba and Ariana Grande plays Glinda, with Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater and Marissa Bode among the main cast.
Released in October 2024, the film runs 162 minutes. Made for about 150 million dollars, it earned roughly 764 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 from around 227,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from over 3,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 407 reviews is higher than the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- Amanda Seyfried auditioned for the role of Glinda. She later said that she took stage speech lessons while preparing for the audition and screen tests. Seyfried attended several auditions on weekends while filming "The Dropout".
