A mysterious force pushes the Moon out of its orbit, setting it on a course toward Earth and threatening the planet with extinction. Weeks before the anticipated impact, a former NASA astronaut, Brian Harper, is drawn back into service. He joins a NASA official, Jocinda Fowler, and a self-taught astronomy enthusiast, KC Houseman, who has been tracking the anomaly and believes the Moon is not what it appears to be. The three set out on a mission to the lunar surface, leaving their families behind, to attempt what others consider impossible.
Roland Emmerich directed and co-wrote the film with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen; Kloser and Emmerich also produced it. It is the fifteenth film Emmerich has directed, following Midway, and it returns to the large-scale disaster territory he is associated with. Halle Berry plays Fowler, Patrick Wilson plays Harper, and John Bradley plays Houseman, with Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu and Michael Peña among the credited cast of seventy-two.
Released in February 2022, the film cost about 146 million dollars to make and took roughly 67 million dollars worldwide, a wide gap between spending and returns. Audiences are divided: on IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from over 95,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 out of 10 from a much smaller group of voters. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 216 reviews places it below both audience scores.
