Short description
Faster is an action thriller about a man known only as Driver, who leaves prison after serving ten years for a robbery that went wrong. His brother was killed in that same robbery, and Driver now devotes himself to tracking down those he holds responsible. Two men close in on him as he works through his list: a veteran police officer nearing retirement and a contract killer who regards Driver as a worthy opponent. The hunter becomes the hunted.
George Tillman Jr. directed the film, which followed Notorious and preceded The Longest Ride in his filmography. The screenplay is by Joe Gayton and Tony Gayton. Dwayne Johnson plays Driver, with Billy Bob Thornton as the officer, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as the killer, and Maggie Grace, Carla Gugino and Tom Berenger in supporting roles.
Released in 2010, the film runs 98 minutes and was made for a budget of 24 million USD, against a worldwide box office of 23 million USD. It holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from 117,000 votes and the same score on TMDB from 2,160 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 4.9 out of 10 from 128 reviews, placing the critical response below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Preparing for the filming of the fight in the club's restroom, Dwayne Johnson spent 2 days studying a fighting style developed by inmates of US correctional facilities.
- Before filming began, director George Tillman Jr. gave the actors involved in the film folders with information about their characters, as well as a list of films he recommended they watch.
- According to the plot, Oliver Jackson-Cohen’s character invariably charges $1 for his services. This is a common practice among hitmen who don't really need the money and are more attracted to the fight, and especially – the opportunity to eliminate a competitor.
- Salma Hayek was initially cast for one of the roles in the film, but she left the project a week before filming began due to scheduling conflicts, and Carla Gugino took over the role.
- In preparation for filming, Dwayne Johnson, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Maggie Grace trained at Rick Seaman's extreme driving school.
- The DVD edition's "Bonus" section features a more extended ending to the film, in which Dwayne Johnson's character finally settles the score with the hitman. This episode was cut from the theatrical release.
- The driver wears the same clothes for all 5 days that the film's plot unfolds, as he can only think about his desire for revenge. Costume designer Salvador Perez Jr. purchased 30 identical outfits for Dwayne Johnson so that the actor could at least change clothes.
