The Joneses

The Joneses follows a family that moves into an affluent suburban neighborhood and quickly becomes the object of everyone's attention. Steve and Kate appear to be a happily married couple, and their teenage children, Jenn and Mick, fit right in with the local crowd. What the neighbors do not know is that the four are not actually a family at all, but employees of a marketing company. Their picture-perfect household is a sales operation: by living visibly and enviably, they plant the desire for the clothes, gadgets and accessories they own, and the neighbors begin copying them. The arrangement is complicated by the fact that each member of the group has personal difficulties that do not fit the role being played.

Derrick Borte wrote and directed the film, his first feature, produced with Andrew Spaulding. It came before Unhinged (2020) and The Get Out (2026) in his directing career. David Duchovny plays Steve and Demi Moore plays Kate, with Amber Heard as Jenn, Benjamin Hollingsworth as Mick, and Lauren Hutton and Gary Cole in supporting roles.

Released in 2010, the film runs 96 minutes and mixes comedy with drama. It was made for about 10 million dollars and took roughly 7 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget at the box office. Audience responses were moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from around 43,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from 662 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 129 reviews places professional opinion in similar territory to the audience scores.
