Short description
Batman & Robin centers on the partnership between Batman and his young ally Robin as they face two new adversaries in Gotham City. Mr. Freeze, a scientist whose body must stay at freezing temperatures, plans to blanket the city in ice, while Poison Ivy, a botanist transformed by an experiment, pursues her own agenda against humanity. The two villains work together, and Poison Ivy turns her attention to turning Robin against his mentor. Meanwhile, Alfred Pennyworth's niece Barbara arrives at Wayne Manor and eventually takes on the role of Batgirl, giving the crime-fighting duo a third partner. The disagreements between Batman and Robin complicate their efforts as the villains' plans advance.
Joel Schumacher directed the film, the tenth of the twenty-one features he made in chronological order, following A Time to Kill and preceding 8MM. Akiva Goldsman wrote the screenplay, and Peter Macgregor-Scott produced. George Clooney plays Batman, Chris O'Donnell returns as Robin, Arnold Schwarzenegger appears as Mr. Freeze, Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl and Michael Gough as Alfred. The production credits list ninety-three credited cast members and two hundred and two credited crew.
Made for 125 million dollars, the film took 238 million dollars worldwide, a return that fell short of a strong multiple on its cost. On IMDb it holds 3.8 out of 10 from 282,000 votes, on TMDB 4.4 out of 10 from 5,559 votes. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 95 reviews sits close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the 83rd minute of the film, Mr. Freeze takes a Christmas ornament in his hand, which is almost completely filled with water. After a shot change, the ornament empties and instantly becomes covered with frost.
- Chris O'Donnell turned down a role in "Men in Black" to play Robin.
- Hulk Hogan and Anthony Hopkins were considered for the role of Mr. Freeze.
- Julia Roberts, Demi Moore, Nicole Kidman, and Sharon Stone were considered for the role played by Uma Thurman.
- When Batman, Robin, and Batgirl climb onto the telescope using grappling hooks at the 105th minute of the film, a member of the film crew can be seen in the bottom right corner of the frame.
- At the 57th minute of the film, when Bane breaks down the boards at the entrance to the Turkish baths, he is wearing a coat and hat. However, when he kicks down the door and enters inside, he is no longer wearing either the coat or the hat.
- When Pamela puts on a wig at the 35th minute of the film, she is wearing leather gloves. After a change of scene, seen over Bane’s shoulder, Pamela is adjusting the wig with her bare hands.
- At the 49th minute of the film, you can see the famous Soviet sculptures “Stand to the Death” and “Motherland Calls,” integrated into the architecture of Gotham.
- Joel Schumacher chose George Clooney for the role of Batman after seeing a photo of him as Seth Gecko from "From Dusk Till Dawn" in a magazine.
- Robin's costume incorporates elements of Nightwing's costume.
- At the 14th minute of the film, Robin jumps towards Mr. Freeze and freezes with a diamond clenched in his hand. In the next scene, Freeze takes the diamond, but it is simply lying in his palm.
- When Barbara tries to guess the password, she looks at a photo with no writing on it and enters “Margaret.” The next frame shows a close-up of the photo, and it now has “love peg” written on it. Earlier, when Barbara first arrived, this inscription was also present on the photo.
- When Poison Ivy pushes Robin into the water at the 99th minute of the film, she has nothing on her wrists. When she stands up from the flower, spiked bracelets appear on her wrists.

- At the 31st minute of the film, Barbara calls out to Alfred, even though he was not yet visible in the doorway.
- It is known that Two-Face dies in the previous film, however, when Bane breaks into the 'Prisoner Personal Effects' room in Arkham, a costume of the former Gotham prosecutor hangs next to the Riddler's costume.
