Short description
Two years after the killings in Woodsboro, Sidney Prescott has moved on to college at Windsor, where she studies drama, has a roommate and a boyfriend, and hopes to leave the past behind. That past returns in the form of a bestselling book by reporter Gale Weathers and a film based on it, Stab, whose campus premiere draws a masked crowd. When a student is murdered during the screening and another killing follows inside the campus itself, Sidney realizes the nightmare has started again and that she can no longer trust anyone around her.
Wes Craven directed the film, the eighteenth of the twenty-five features he made in chronological order, arriving after Scream and before Music of the Heart. Kevin Williamson wrote the screenplay, with Cathy Konrad and Marianne Maddalena producing. Neve Campbell returns as Sidney, alongside Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, David Arquette as Dewey Riley, and Jerry O'Connell, Elise Neal and Timothy Olyphant. The credited cast numbers seventy-two and the crew one hundred and twenty-seven.
Made for 24 million dollars, the film took about 172 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 234,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from about 4,900 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 133 reviews places it above both audience scores.

- Erik Mabius, Natasha Gregson Wagner, and Paula Marshall auditioned for various roles in the film.
- In most cases, voices for phone calls are recorded not during filming, but during post-production. However, Roger L. Jackson, who played "the voice," actually spoke on a cell phone with the actors in scenes where the killer calls various characters in the film. Roger was constantly present on the set, but in a way that the actor speaking on the phone couldn’t see him.
- Sarah Michelle Gellar agreed to star in the film without reading the script.
- Gale mentions her explicit photos that appeared on the internet. A similar situation occurred with Courteney Cox in the mid-1990s.
- Poleta Patterson, who played the usher at the movie theater who gave Maureen and Phil the masks, won the role in a special contest held by MTV.
- During a phone conversation, Cici says, "Sarah found out that Bailey slept with Gwen." This phrase is a reference to the series "Party of Five," in which Neve Campbell, who played Sidney Prescott, appeared.

- All the actors received a script missing the last ten pages, so no one knew who the killer was in the film until it was time to shoot the final scene.
