Ross Bodine and Frank Post work as cowhands on Walter Buckman's ranch, and the two men could hardly be more different. Ross is nearing fifty and worries about what will become of him once he is too old for ranch work, while Frank is young, restless and eager for a life better than tending cattle. After a fellow cowboy is killed in an accident, Frank proposes that the pair rob a bank to secure their futures. Ross agrees with reluctance, and the robbery succeeds at first, but Buckman and his sons take the betrayal by their own trusted hands badly and set out after the two men.
Blake Edwards directed and wrote the screenplay, making this the eleventh of the twenty-seven films he directed, following Darling Lili and preceding The Return of the Pink Panther. William Holden plays Ross and Ryan O'Neal plays Frank, with Karl Malden as Walter Buckman, Lynn Carlin as Sada Billings, and Tom Skerritt and Joe Don Baker as Buckman's sons. Thirty-two cast members are credited.
The film was released in June 1971 and runs 136 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from around 2,300 votes, while on TMDB the rating is 6.1 from a much smaller group of 52 votes.
