Marjorie has lived a long life as a violinist, and now her memory is failing. A holographic companion service lets her spend time with Walter, a projection of her late husband as a much younger man, whose appearance and conversation match how she prefers to remember him. The film places this technology in a near-future setting and centers on the relationships around Marjorie: her daughter Tess, Tess's husband, and the questions the projection raises about what the family chooses to tell and to forget.
Michael Almereyda directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jordan Harrison, adapting Harrison's play. The film follows Cymbeline and Experimenter in Almereyda's filmography and precedes Tesla. Geena Davis plays Tess, Jon Hamm plays Walter, and Hannah Gross appears as a younger Marjorie.
Critics rated the film notably higher than general audiences did, at 7.4 out of 10 across 93 reviews, compared with 6.3 on IMDb from about 7,200 votes and 6.1 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 215. It runs 99 minutes and was produced by 141 Entertainment and Passage Pictures.
